Last weekend ZUMA had an awesome showing at the Katana BJJ Tournament in Vancouver, BC. From our Ultimate Kid's BJJ Program we had Pheonix Saugstead win gold, Danny Schupbach and Eric Lindsay take silver, and Zoe Lindsay participate (in her first tournament at 6 years old!)
Allen Magat (white belt) cleaned out his division taking gold, as did Ben Salamon (blue belt), Kirsten Page (blue belt) and Krista Gooderham (blue belt). Connor Wood and Rich Noonan were in the same blue belt division and finished atop the podium together after winning their way to the finals and flipping a coin to determine who got gold/silver. After a strange call by the refs, Leeam Dagan ended up taking home the bronze in his blue belt division.
Krista also won Gold in the blue belt absolute division with her gold medal match being one of the most exciting of the day. She was down by 1 point with 30 seconds remaining and managed to get the pass to mount in the last 5 seconds. The timer sounded and she was given her points with the crowd cheering (and the other woman's team voicing their discontent!) A great way to end the day!
It was a great tournament and a great ZUMA team effort. Jordan Kersch, Jonathan Roberts, Nick Berry and Andrew Tram also competed on the ZUMA team and joined in to cheer after their matches. We look forward to an even bigger showing at the next one!
